Final Film : Time Behind Time (Short Film)

Task 11 : Studio Logo And Ideas

For our studio name upon the artifact and within the film we wanted to relate the name back to the ideas within in the film in order to show a connection and not making it seem just like a random name or idea. we thought up a few different ideas but in the end we decided that the link between the film and the name of the studio/institution would tie in with theme of time travel therefore we came up with man different ideas for names revolving around the idea of time travel 

- time changing studios 

-Paradox studios

- Relativity studios

- Generation Films 

- lifetime Films 

etc

However in the end we came up with Time Line Studios. The reason we chose this is because it implies the theme of time and the significance of the timeline but also because the word play could allow us to add a graphic logo or image with the title 

 For our first idea we came up with the idea of having the text having a timeline below and above with the one below breaking off into different directions like a family tree however we wanted a more simple and cleaner idea.

With this idea i decided to show a timeline going behind all the letters of the title and at one end have some small lines coming off the timeline. this was an effective title and matched up with the criteria for the convention of Action and Suspense.

With this idea we went back to the theme of having what looked like a family tree growing form underneath, the first idea was to have the titles and tree based around a triangle shape. this also matched conventions for titles having a logo bade around them however not having it to complex.

This was the final title based upon the the idea of having family tree shape progressing downwards in a triangular fashion. we then kept the words in white and made them bold also keeping the same font for all other credits and titles. for the lines of the image we gave them a 3D bevel to make them appear more interesting whilst also giving them a blue tint to fit conventions. then instead of keeping the boxes plain white we also gave them a 3D bevel and added a gradient that was the same over all of them as it progressed down the darker it became.

Task 11: Print Artifact - Poster

 I used the ideas for a poster we had come up with as a starting point to create it.

We wanted to use back to back to show the different locations and times. One side showing the past and the other the future.

This was the first draft I created, it has conventional features including

- the colours blue and white
-titles including film name, actor name, credits and release date
- studio logo
- slogan

One other feature is a website address, whilst this wasn't a conventional feature within the posters I previously looked at, the inclusion of a website address or/and a social networking site page such as Facebook and Twitter is becoming ever more popular. 

The main thing that didn't work about this version is the positioning of the titles, whilst I like the position of the main title, I wanted the actors name to be either above or below it and this wasn't possible. As well as that if even if it did it would leave a considerable blank space on the other side of the poster.

This is the second version, I really do like this version except for the blank area of blue space. All of the titles are situated at the bottom except the slogan and I felt that out poster needed a better balance. After creating this version i noticed the blue top showing on the graveyard side and although its not too noticeable, for the final version I removed it.

I chose this text as the lines and crosses it has can show the idea of forward and backward, but it also related to the grave yard, I added shadows to it so it stands out more from the background.

After discussing which out of the 3 posters I had created was the best we decided that the poster below would be our film poster. We also asked our peers for there opinion on which we should chose and the majority chose same one we had.

Task 11- Print Artifact:- Film Review

The Film Review was another artifact that we had to create in order to achieve high marks in our production. I had to decide quickly how I coloured, arranged and applied the text to make it look realistic and similar to those film reviews that all ready exist.

As part of creating a top-rated film review I had to view different reviews that already existed and reflect and analyse them as a whole. What i found is most reviews from "EMPIRE Magazine" is that they are all set out the same, which is why i decided to study the layout, etc of reviews given by them to create our productions.

As I continued to recreate a EMPIRE film review it became much more simpler to place different features into areas because they just felt right where I was putting them originally. So with the screenshot photograph it just made its own in its position.

But then it didn't become simple anymore because I reached the most crucial part of a review, the actual review itself. I found this difficult because even though I knew my production very well I could re-word my comments about it into a reviewers context as I had to be clever about what I said. 

In my opinion I still found it quite difficult to apply the words in the review but I think I did quite well considering I was unsure on what and how to do it.

Final Film Review

Task 11: Poster (Photoshoot and other photos)

For these photos for the poster we had to set up the green screen. I then took photos of Kyle standing one way with the future outfit on and the other way with the past outfit on. I then had to cut Kyle out on Photoshop to put him on the poster, this was made considerably easier by the green screen.

 The bridge shot was taken when we were filming and it was suitable enough to use on the poster with a few adjustments.The other bridge shot was over exposed and had Kyle in the background.

 The element needed was the graveyard, these were taken when we returned to the graveyard to get a few extra shots. For the poster I had to use another sky so the graveyard had more atmosphere.

Task 11: Artifact Idea

This is one of our ideas for an artifact with the film. The composition is based around key elements within in the film. 

- Firstly the poster is split into halves this is to represent the past shown by the bridge and path on the left and the future on the right as shown with the grave stones which represent the friend that is killed within the film.  

also for this Kyle will wear the clothing that is worn in the film therefore showing the difference between his past and future self. 

- The clock is the for the logo of the production which is shown as a moving clock near the start of the film which is moving in reverse to convey the theme of time travel. 

-The photo shoot for this will consist of Kyle standing in front of a green screen and having pictures taken of him as both versions of himself standing in the opposite direction to the previous character then using the green screen we will pick up on the green and impose 2 picks from the picture locations then all that's left is any words , titles or captions. 

Task 10: Filming - Behind The Scene Shots Green Screen.

These are a few of the shots I took whilst we were recording the green screen vanishing scenes. The first showing the basic set up, the camera was on a tripod to ensure we kept these shots steady. The main problem we faced was that the green screen wasn't able to be made wide enough so it filled the entire frame of the camera, we had to remember this when filming making sure that the action wasn't happening near the edge of the green screen. This was in part because the width of the room wasn't wide enough but also the stand on the green screen.

 This photo was taken when we was filming it shows Kyle through the screen of the camera but also on the green screen. James was doing the majority of the filming for this scene to enable me to take photos of the action although I did make my suggestions about the shots, I would also adjust the green screen if necessary.
                                                                                 This photo shows how we needed to keep the length of the green screen as we was doing floor shots, the restrictions of the room we were using meant the green screen had to be set up this way.

Task 10 : Filming - Vanishing Scenery

These pictures show how we filmed a scene with Kyle in front of the green screen.in order to do this we had to stretch the green screen over all the frame in order for it to not show any creases and make it wide enough so that it filled the camera frame therefore it allows the software to pic up the colour of the green screen and over lay an image on the selected colour for us being green. This was used to create a scene in which we would fade the scene of Kyle out as he travels back in time whilst over laying an image of a location from the previous scene but in a different angle to suit the way Kyle is sat. 

The benefits of the green screen is that you can take pictures of the location if you don't have time to film that day and then use a green screen to put them into the scene, however the disadvantages of this technique is that the green screen can create noise in the film giving the area around the actor of which was green screen but now the overlapped imagery tends to have a fuzzy, grainy feel that will crackle on the screen. this problem can be reduced by pulling the green screen smooth usually or by applying a noise filter effect over the scene however this is not always possible to remove and therefore can detract form the realness of the scene overall effecting the film quality.

 This video shows how we filmed Kyle. What we'd aimed for was a Medium shot just below the waist in order to show him disappear in the film in align to the perspective of the picture we had taken. If we hadn't done this type of shot for were to far away then Kyle wouldn't have been proportional for the location he was appearing in and if we had to enlarge the background image to compensate then it would begin to pixelate so scaling and framing for this shot was important.

Task 10 : Filming ( outtakes and attempts of 180 degree turn)

In this shot it is set as Kyle reemerges from travelling through time into the past to this point starting with a long shot of Kyle appearing out of a bush then the original idea was to follow it up with a 180 degree turn to where me and Kyle would walk down the road however in this attempt it was hard not to smile.

This 2nd attempt of the same shot from above proves more of a success with Kyle being able to stay in character however upon turning the camera we found that we had a dodgy tripod in that it only liked to turn to the left and wouldn't turn to the right without tightening up the screw fixed plate so this ended up causing a problem for the rest of the shots that followed this own forcing us to abandon the idea of a 180 degree turn due to the time constraints and having to move on to film the next scenes. Nevertheless we did attempt the 180 degree turn with footage to show these unsuccessful attempts and due to angle of the camera we couldn't film the scene without the camera being supported by the tripod instead of film by hand.

Task 10 Filming - Behind The Scene Shots

These are photos I took when we were filming our scenes in the graveyard these ranged from long shots to reverse tracking.

The first photo shows the filming of an establishing shot of the graveyard to set the scene; this was done after choosing the location we felt best.

The next shows the filming of a shot where he walks away from gravestone of his friend. The camera was on a tripod at this point to ensure the continuing shots after or any before would be able to work without a slight change caused by movement or movement of the camera.

This shows the filming of the scene where he is talking to the gravestone; this shot was done without a tripod as this enabled us to get the correct angle we want to film the scene from.

This photo shows the filming of the reverse tracking, this was done by hand as we needed to move the camera.

Task 10: Filming (branch outtakes and attempts)

For these shots they were to capture the branch hitting Kyle from behind. With this version of the shot we attempted a close up shot of Kyle whilst slightly looking up towards him as the branch appears over his shoulder however with this version Kyle was unable to tell when the branch hit him on the shoulder therefore unable to act out a reaction plus when the branch is in the shot its hard to see as it blends into the background of tree leaves not making it feel effective enough from that angle . 

In this shot we tried to over compensate the angle of the shot by tilting the camera further upwards towards the sky in an attempt to minimise the tree leaves in the background however we couldn't keep the camera steady enough to move back at a quick enough pace therefore Kyle ended up being to close to the camera meaning he was concentrating on the camera again meaning he couldn't react properly because the camera was to close even though we could see the branch this time.

In this shot we tried to capture the run up to the hit with the stick. To do this we tried an over the shoulder shot instead with Kyle holding the camera in front of his shoulder and then me this time dressing up in Kyle's clothes to make it look like he was in 2 places ,however with this attempt I didn't know the timing for the shot and how fast i should be swinging therefore i swung too slow making it look to gentle. 
  

This shot was the final shot and similar to the last in how it shows me running up behind Kyle. in this shot i ran much faster and swung the branch in a more believable manner almost hitting Kyle in the process. Nevertheless this shot was successful in being a over the shoulder shot whilst Kyle walked on forward whilst give a long shot from behind in order to see my approach upon Kyle .

This scene is set after the previous shot of Kyle being hit by the branch and depicts Kyle up close at first and then in our finish and final shot we had him walk off into the distance , however in this brief shot we realised that the camera wasn't high enough and that Kyle had forgot to put his hood up which would have wrecked the continuity if it wasn't noticed.

Task 10: Filming - Travel back in Time

These pictures were taken on 23/11/2013 when we filmed in the grave yard to gather some of the final scenes for our film. These shots were to be placed at the start of the film in order to show where the character started off and what he wanted to achieve by going back in time to save his friend who is named on the grave at the beginning.

In the end we used this shot for the grave and then photo shopped the grave stone to remove my reflection but to also change the age and remove the woman's age.

Task 10 : Filming (bridge outtakes and attempts)

This shot is planned as a long shot of the bridge that then zooms in upon Kyle going under the bridge. the shot was hard to film and took many attempts to get it right. This was the first attempt and didn't work because when i was zooming in on Kyle i zoomed in to fast therefore filling the frame with the back of Kyle's head

In this shot it was a different day and another attempt at the shot again however this was more successful until near the end when the camera was zoomed in which resulted in small movement being amplified on screen so when the camera slipped slightly i lost Kyle from the shot however this was a salvageable shot if need be 

Again another attempt at the same shot in order to get one full good shot however if this attempt the camera was partially zoomed in and so then i ended up zooming out instead of in when it come to Kyle walking under the bridge.

This was one of the final attempts for this shot and  in this one we managed to get the whole shot done without any mistakes allowing us to have a full shot and on a similar looking day to the other shots by having similar weather and lighting conditions.
